The new varlink methods are basically equivalent to 'ip link set INTERFACE up/down',
but they support polkit authentication. Also, on LinkDown, it gracefully
stops dynamic engines like DHCP client/server before the interface is
bring down. Hence, e.g. an empty RA on stop should be sent.

Previously, setting HibernateDelaySec= would disable ACPI battery trip
point (_BTP) alarms, forcing the system to rely solely on software
polling for battery checks. This could result in the battery draining
to 0% between polling intervals, causing data loss.
Now, when ACPI _BTP is available AND HibernateDelaySec= is set, both
mechanisms work together. The system will hibernate on whichever comes
first: low battery (instant hardware alarm) or the configured timeout.
This also properly respects HibernateOnACPower=no by resetting the
timer while on AC power, matching the documented behavior.

Add JSON_BUILD_PAIR_IN_ADDR_WITH_STRING, JSON_BUILD_PAIR_IN6_ADDR_WITH_STRING,
and JSON_BUILD_PAIR_IN4_ADDR_WITH_STRING macros (plus _NON_NULL variants) that
emit both the binary address array and a human-readable string representation.
For example, an address field now emits both:
"Address": [192, 168, 1, 1]
"AddressString": "192.168.1.1"
This improves usability of the JSON/Varlink output for debugging and tooling
that consumes networkd state.
Updated networkd-json.c to use these new macros for addresses, neighbors,
nexthops, routes, routing policy rules, DNS servers, NTP servers, SIP servers,
domains, DHCPv6 prefixes, and link-local addresses.
Also updated the Varlink interface definitions to include the new string fields.
When [DHCPPrefixDelegation] Assign=no, networkd creates routes instead of
addresses. These routes need to populate nftables sets for firewall
rules to work correctly.
This commit adds dhcp_pd_route_modify_nft_set() to handle NFT set
updates for DHCP-PD routes, similar to how address_modify_nft_set()
handles them for addresses.

Add a test case to verify that cat_files() correctly handles symlinks
to /dev/null (masked configuration files) and returns success (0)
instead of failing.
This test complements the fix for issue #40313.

Make bus acquisition conditional in verb_edit() and verb_cat(), following
the same pattern used in verb_enable(). When install_client_side() returns
non-zero (indicating --global, --root, offline, or similar scenarios), skip
acquiring a D-Bus connection and perform all operations client-side.
Changes:
- Only acquire bus when install_client_side() returns NO
- Use mangle_names() instead of expand_unit_names() in client-side mode
- Pass force_client_side flag based on bus availability
- Skip bus-dependent operations (need_daemon_reload, etc.) when bus is NULL
This allows 'systemctl edit --global' and 'systemctl cat --global' to work
correctly, fixing the regression introduced by commit d77d42ed3a.
Test cases added to verify:
- Creating and editing global user units with --runtime
- Reading global units with cat --global
- Proper detection and rejection of masked units in client-side mode
- Tests use /run/ instead of /etc/ for safer temporary testing

When operating in client-side mode (force_client_side=true), unit_find_paths()
now checks if the unit file is masked (symlinked to /dev/null or empty) and
returns -ERFKILL, matching the behavior of the server-side path.
This centralizes masked unit detection in one place, making it consistent
across both client-side and server-side operations.
When varlink parameters are empty, omit the "parameters" field entirely
rather than sending "parameters":{}. This reduces message size and
follows varlink specification which allows parameters to be omitted.
The implementation supports three equivalent representations for empty
parameters: field omission, JSON null, and empty object {}. All three
are accepted on input for backward compatibility.

Implements DHCP option 15 (Domain Name) for systemd-networkd's DHCP
server, allowing administrators to configure the DNS default domain that
clients should use.
This addresses the feature request in issue #37077, where users needed
to manually configure domain names using
SendOption=15:string:example.com as a workaround.
This adds two new configuration options to the [DHCPServer] section:
- EmitDomain= (boolean): whether to send domain name to clients
- Domain= (string): the domain name to send (e.g., "example.com")
Example configuration:
[DHCPServer] EmitDomain=yes Domain=example.com
This eliminates the need for manual workarounds using
SendOption=15:string:...

Implements the ability to add recovery keys to existing user accounts
via homectl update --recovery-key=yes. Previously, recovery keys could
only be configured during initial user creation, requiring users to
recreate their entire home directory to add recovery keys later.

Enhance CPU time logging to include wall clock duration alongside
CPU consumption. When a unit transitions to inactive/failed state,
the log message now shows both CPU time consumed and the total wall
clock time since activation.
Changes:
- Calculate wall clock duration using active_enter_timestamp
- Update log format: "Consumed Xs CPU time over Ys wall clock time"
- Fallback to original format if no activation timestamp available
- Use monotonic clock for accurate duration calculation
This addresses issue #35738 by providing administrators better context
about service performance and resource efficiency.
Example output:
- With wall clock: "service: Consumed 30s CPU time over 5min wall clock time"
- Without timestamp: "service: Consumed 30s CPU time"
