Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek c3dead53d5 procfs-util: fix confusion wrt. quantity limit and maximum value
From packit/rawhide-arm64 logs:
Assertion 'limit >= INT_MAX || get_process_ppid(limit+1, NULL) == -ESRCH' failed at src/test/test-process-util.c:855, function test_get_process_ppid(). Aborting.
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――

The kernel has a few different limits. In particular kernel.threads-max can be
set to some lower value, and kernel.pid_max can be set to a higher value. This
is nice because it reduces PID reuse, even if the number of threads that is
allowed is limited. But the tests assumed that we cannot have a thread with
PID above MIN(kernel.threads-max, kernel.pid_max-1), which is not valid.

So let's rework the whole thing: let's expose the helpers to read
kernel.threads-max and kernel.pid_max, and print what they return in tests.
procfs_tasks_get_limit() was something that is only used in tests, and wasn't
very well defined, so let's drop it.

Fixes #21193.

Daan De Meyer 88022148c4 core: Try to prevent infinite recursive template instantiation
To prevent situations like in #17602 from happening, let's drop
direct recursive template dependencies. These will almost certainly
lead to infinite recursion so let's drop them immediately to avoid
instantiating potentially thousands of irrelevant units.

Example of a template that would lead to infinite recursion which
is caught by this check:

notify@.service:

```
[Unit]
Wants=notify@%n.service
```

Greg Zuro cfee6b9551 change indicator used for later versions of VirtualBox (#21127)
Detection of VirtualBox is accomplished in the existing code by *either* `innotek GmbH`
or `Oracle Corporation` existing in any of:

- /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name
- /sys/class/dmi/id/sys_vendor
- /sys/class/dmi/id/board_vendor
- /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_vendor

With Oracle's physical servers, both `/sys/class/dmi/id/sys_vendor` and
`/sys/class/dmi/id/board_vendor` contain `Oracle Corporation`, so those
servers are detected as `oracle` (VirtualBox).

VirtualBox has the following values in the latest versions:

- /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name: `VirtualBox`
- /sys/class/dmi/id/sys_vendor: `innotek GmbH`
- /sys/class/dmi/id/board_vendor: `Oracle Corporation`
- /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_vendor: `innotek GmbH`

Presumably the existing check for `innotek GmbH` is meant to detect
older versions of VirtualBox, while changing the second checked value
from `Oracle Corporation` to `VirtualBox` will reliably detect later and future
versions.

Lennart Poettering d96f21eec2 stat-util: make sure dir_is_empty_at() does something useful in all cases 2021-10-25 21:51:37 +02:00
Lennart Poettering a068aceafb stat-util: optimize dir_is_empty_at() a bit, by using getdents64()
That way we have a single syscall only for it, instead of the multiple
readdir() and friends do. And we can operate entirely on the stack, no
malloc() implicit.

Anssi Hannula 37e4637a9e efivars: skip writing if variable is already in wanted state
In order to minimize EFI variable NVRAM wear, do not rewrite variables
if they are already in the wanted state (i.e. same data and attributes).

This allows e.g. performing repeat calls of "bootctl install" (which
always rewrites the EFI boot entry) without consuming EFI NVRAM write
cycles.

Lennart Poettering 43cac49092 process-util: move sync() out of freeze()
We are using this for creating userns namespaces, and we really
shouldn't try to sync there. Moreover the use of free() in shutdown code
doesn't need it anyway, since it just sync()ed right before anyway. Only
the third user of freeze() we have actually needs the syc(), hence do it
there and nowhere else.

Lennart Poettering 979b0ff2c4 namespace-util: introduce userns_acquire() as helper for allocating new unbound userns

allocate a userns independently.

Lennart Poettering d6274e6b8f fd-util: tweak error handling in fd_reopen()

Lennart Poettering b4f73d1e17 fd-util: when re-opening a directory with fd_reopen() go via openat(…, ".", …)
This adds a tiny shortcut to fd_reopen(): if we are about to reopen the
fd via O_DIRECTORY then we know it#s a directory and we might as well
reopen it via opening "." using the fd as "at fd" in openat().

This has the benefit that we don't need /proc/self/fd/ around for this
special case: fewer sources of errors.

Lennart Poettering 2f82562bad alloc-util: add strdupa_safe() + strndupa_safe() and use it everywhere
Let's define two helpers strdupa_safe() + strndupa_safe() which do the
same as their non-safe counterparts, except that they abort if called
with allocations larger than ALLOCA_MAX.

This should ensure that all our alloca() based allocations are subject
to this limit.

afaics glibc offers three alloca() based APIs: alloca() itself,
strndupa() + strdupa(). With this we have now replacements for all of
them, that take the limit into account.

Lennart Poettering 9e1a759903 alloc-util: introduce new helper alloca_safe()
This is like alloca(), but does two things:

1. Verifies the allocation is smaller than ALLOCA_MAX
2. Ensures we allocate at least one byte

This was previously done manually in all invocations. This adds a handy
helper that does that implicitly.

Boqun Feng 506bbc8569 virt: Support detection for ARM64 Hyper-V guests
The detection of Microsoft Hyper-V VMs is done by cpuid currently,
however there is no cpuid on ARM64. And since ARM64 is now a supported
architecture for Microsoft Hyper-V guests[1], then use DMI tables to
detect a Hyper-V guest, which is more generic and works for ARM64.
